VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY, LYMPHEDEMA & CHRONIC SWELLING SPECIALISTS Occupational therapy & Physical Therapy services about THE CLINIC Led by Clinic Directors, Vicki Ralph, MPPA, OTR/L, CLT-LANA & Julia Osborne, PT, CLT-LANA, we have a team of dedicated edema therapy specialists. We have the clinical skills & experience to create unique and specific plans for our patients in all phases of treatment. Our treatments encompass manual therapy, skin/nail care, compression, customized exercise programs & nutrition. Edema Rehab is part of the Oncology Rehab group and focuses on lower-body swelling conditions resulting from a variety of reasons including lymphedema, venous insufficiency, surgery or cancer treatments. Our mission is to provide patient-specific rehabilitation services to optimize recovery, function and quality of life while providing an environment that promotes empathy and emotional empowerment. The goal is to help our patients live their lives as normally, as fully and as actively as possible - both during treatment and for years afterward. We are based in the Denver Tech Center and are one of the few lymphedema and edema clinics to specialize in leg swelling. We founded the clinic because, although there are around 3 million lymphedema patients in the USA, there is still a major lack of medical knowledge and expertise and some people are still told 'there is nothing that can be done to help'. As a result patients are often left without the treatment options they need - we can help! KEY questions - DO YOU NEED OUR HELP? Do one or both of your legs swell as the day progresses? Do you have pain / aching / heaviness / fatigue / tingling in your legs? Have your lower legs become darker in color? Have you ever had skin infections in your legs called cellulitis? Do you have a history of ulcers or difficult to heal wounds on your legs? Have you ever had fluid leak uncontrollably from your legs for days or weeks? If you press your finger into your legs does it leave an indentation that lasts more than 15 seconds? Have you found compression stockings uncomfortable, difficult to get on/off and/or ineffective? After a surgery, do you have chronic swelling in your leg or foot? Is elevation no longer effective in reducing your swelling? Have you had lymph nodes removed as part of a cancer treatment? Why choose EDEMA REHAB FOR YOUR treatment? We have enormous experience in providing leading-edge treatment for patients with leg swelling resulting from primary or secondary lymphedema, morbid obesity, chronic venous insufficiency, stubborn post-surgical swelling and dependent edema. By reducing leg swelling, we can also effectively improve the healing process for leg ulcers and wounds. The therapy we provide helps with the full range of conditions resulting from edema - pain, stiffness, loss of function, scar tissue & fibrosis, recurrent skin infections, weakness, fatigue, restricted range of motion and difficulties with reintegration back to work life, home life and recreational activities. Our sister clinic Oncology Rehab focuses on all facets of rehabilitation from cancer treatment including mitigation and management of upper extremity (arms, trunk, head & neck) lymphedema caused by cancer treatment. Our manual therapy and compression techniques and our deep understanding of the lymphatic system will help reduce the risk of future edema complications. The cornerstone of our practice is in risk reduction with early intervention, however, we are also the foremost experts in managing edema conditions at any stage of their progression. patient feedback Judy Culbertson and Joni Miller gave me the best treatments, education, and encouragement to not just get through this initial phase of treating my Lymphedema, but to own it and manage it for the rest of my life. I successfully completed my MLD (manual lymphatic drainage) in 8 weeks and started the transition to being fitted for daytime and nighttime garments. I was treated with the highest quality of service, the most straightforward information, and the tools for me to graduate and take on the self management of my condition. tdc 2012 “Thank you Judy for ALL of the help that you have given me. What a relief to see my “old” legs back. Judy’s emotional and mental help has given me the ability and strength to take care of my physical condition! Her patience is remarkable. Judy, may you continue to assist others for a very long time.” sg 2012 Thanks Sarah and Vicki for my amazing leg results, you are true professionals WF 2013 Our main EDEMA therapy TECHNIQUES include Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) CDT is considered the gold standard of treatment for lymphedema that has progressed beyond stage 1. CDT is a combination of MLD, bandaging of the affected areas, remedial exercises, and skin and nail care. Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) MLD is a gentle, non-invasive manual technique whereby the skin is stretched and torqued to encourage lymph flow. With the correct pressure, direction and speed, MLD can greatly enhance recovery and facilitate drainage. Compression Bandaging & Compression Garments Multi layered compression bandaging, also called wrapping, is the application of several layers of padding and short-stretch bandages to the affected areas to reduce swelling. Compression garments may be prescribed once the swelling has been controlled. Therapeutic Exercise, Nutrition & self care Light exercises encourage movement of the lymph fluid out of your affected limbs. Therapeutic exercise while wearing compression bandaging can be a valuable part of therapy. Nutrition and self-care education will help reintegrate you into daily life. What to expect as a patient at edema rehab The clinic has eight private treatment rooms where the majority of patient treatments take place. On your first visit, your therapist will perform an initial evaluation that looks at the whole person to create treatment goals centered on your needs and abilities.
